Open Air Quality (India)

Good initiative by Rainmatter Foundation to collect and present hyperlocal AQI data across India - OAQ.

In India, we are quite lacking in public data when it comes to weather and air quality. So it is good to see someone taking initiative on one of the two important metrics regarding our surroundings.

Weather is hard - you need a lot of satellite imagery and data points first. You cannot simply "crowd source" it. But AQI is easier - anyone can acquire an air quality monitor relatively cheaply and can contribute their location and metrics in real time.

Hopefully this takes off and leads to authorities clamping down on air pollution. I hope that the popular weather apps and LLMs also start using this data to present hyperlocal information. The iPhone's Weather app today probably shows the same AQI for all of Bangalore which is not helpful at all.
